Tuition Centres

Over the last couple of years the Bestseller Fund and SJDT have worked with a Tsunami relief project in Tranquebar to help the poorest and lowest ranked people of Tranquebar overcome this disaster. This is done by making 15 tuition centers where children can get an education. The teachers teaching these children have received the needed education to in order improve their teaching skills and help the children to form Child Right Committees.

At daytime many of the centers serve as day care centre for the smallest children where they get basic education and nutritious food. The Women Self-help Groups also use the centers where they participate in the Micro-credit programme and receive education in savings, leadership, accounting and entrepreneurship, courses in for example masonry and tailoring are also available at the centre.

The tuition centers play an important role in the Tsunami relief project. This strategy paved way for the children to receive continuous education and skills on leadership though the day care centers and complementary schools. The term complementary is used to describe schools which are operated on a part-time basis for a variety of educational purposes by voluntary organizations that represent different ethnic minorities.
